Stone Wall Installation:
Stone Walls, also called Stone Veneers are beautiful structures normally used to enhance the look of a house or a patio. They can be built with natural thin stone, natural thick stone (also called building stone) or artificial stone veneer. This, together with the several installation techniques, gives us almost infinite possibilities when choosing a design for our house.

Thin natural or artificial stone is always installed against an existing wall. This wall can be an old brick wall that we want to cover, or a new concrete wall built just for this stone application. Either way, the stone will NOT need a footer as it will stick to the wall by itself with cement.
Depending on the look and shape of the stone, the wall could be built with cement joints, or jointless, it all depends on the home owner's desire.
For this applications, is always recomendable to nail steel laths and apply a layer of scratch coat to the existing wall to create a rough surface for the cement to sit on. (longer lasting and faster installation).
On the other hand, if the selected stone is a thick building stone (about 4" in thickness) the procedure changes. We can still choose to have a joint or jointless wall, but now the stones will need a proper footer to sit on. The difference with the thin veneer, is that these stones will not stick to a wall, but they will, instead, sit on top of each other. This makes the need of a back up wall innecesary. They can be installed by themselves.
These walls do not need steel laths, but they do usually require weep holes if installed against the face of the house to avoid moisture coming inside.
This is a broad overview and differences between stone wall installation. There are many installation details and techniques that are not explained here.
